The Maryland Park Service has launched the “Miles for Maryland” Trail Challenge, inviting hikers to log 250 miles in state parks throughout 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reports the Maryland state park system includes 48 designated state parks covering over 97,000 acres, attracting nearly 22 million visitors annually. With so many parks you won’t have a shortage of options to hike thru the year.

Challenge Overview

This year-long event runs from January 1 to December 31, 2026, encouraging participants to explore Maryland’s diverse landscapes, known as “America in Miniature.” Individuals or teams aim for a collective 250 miles hiked exclusively within Maryland State Parks, using methods like apps, maps, or journals to track progress.

How to Participate

Register for $25 through the DNR Outdoor Store at www.shopdnr.com to receive a keepsake item and qualify for prizes. Team leaders handle registration and monthly mileage reports via the challenge webpage, including park-specific details and your invoice number; photo submissions enter you into extra monthly drawings.

Prizes and Perks

Completers enter a grand prize drawing, with proof possibly required for winners. Note that registration excludes park entry fees—consider the Annual State Park & Trail Passport ($75 for residents, $100 out-of-state) for unlimited vehicle access, boat launching, and discounts.

Tips for Success

Aim for about 4.8 miles weekly or 20.8 monthly to hit 250 by year-end; a 5K race counts as 3.1 miles. Families can use tracking coloring sheets or “Myles the Squirrel” printables, and plan around busy summer weekends requiring reservations.
